Downtown Baton Rouge is an increasingly popular neighborhood for apartment dwellers, especially for people under 40. While being close to all the important businesses, a downtown apartment is also conveniently close to major attractions.

When you live in a downtown apartment, you'll be surrounded by a host of well-known historic attractions, including the Old Louisiana State Capitol that's one of the area's finest examples of Gothic architecture. The Old Governor's Mansion has been converted into a restored museum and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Downtown apartments are very close to the Mississippi River, so there are numerous activities and sightseeing opportunities. The USS Kidd is an important maritime landmark and an important World War II museum. Being close to the water also has its advantages: The average temperature never exceeds 80 degrees except on occasional summer days. Winters are never very cold either, but Baton Rouge is quite humid year round.

A few miles away is Louisiana State University, including the LSU Rural Life Museum which displays 19th century plantation life. And speaking of the great outdoors, the Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Reserve in South Baton Rouge has 101 acres of flora and fauna to see.

Living downtown, you'll find yourself in the very heart of the restaurants district. And the area's specialty? Cajun of course. We're talking lip-smacking shrimp etouffee, peppery catfish, gumbo and fried pickles. In the center of town, there is a growing entertainment section with bars and music venues.

Commuting to work in Baton Rouge is usually done by car, taking less than twenty minutes on average. Parking in Baton Rouge is not a problem, but public transport is skimpy at best - which is not uncommon for the South. Rents for a downtown apartment are extremely reasonable compared to other major metropolitan areas. Much of Baton Rouge is quite safe and walkable at night.
